OP-G-10 Insurance, Risk Management and Workers’ Compensation

OBJECTIVE
There are two primary program areas related to this policy: insurance coverage and worker’s compensation as identified below.

1. The insurance program at FSU is built through guidance and regulations promulgated by the State of Florida through Department of Financial Services (DFS), Division of Risk Management, with supplemental policies administered through the Division of Management Services (DMS). Private carrier policies may also be purchased based on applicability and need.

2. The program for worker’s compensation is administered by this section as directed by DFS.

OVERVIEW
The fundamental insurance structure is directed through regulations and guidance from DFS. Primary insurance is through the State’s self insurance plan. By definition, the self insurance programs are designed to reduce the costs associated with premiums by tight controls of coverage. The State program is limited to specific perils with building coverage based on an actual cost basis. Additional coverage is regulated through DFS with limits and exclusions based on type of insurance.

A. RESPONSIBILITIES

The Risk and Insurance Services section is responsible for coordination of insurance policies and worker’s compensation for FSU. They work with DFS to ensure coverage through existing insurance policies. Additionally, DMS provides insurance coverage that is purchased based on needs identified on campus for other potential loss areas.

Each department is responsible for ensuring that current information is available for property insurance and any additional insurance that may be needed to be purchased.
